Another new passenger ship commissioned by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality to Özata Shipyard and named by the votes of the İzmir folks was launched into the gulf.  

The 12th of the 15 new passenger ships built for İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and named by the people of Izmir, with an approximate cost of 8 million Euro, were launched into the gulf.  The ship arriving in Izmir Gulf following the final checks of the shipyard located in Yalova was named after Metin Oktay, the legendary football player of the Turkish football.  It was stated that Metin Oktay will start its voyages in the upcoming days after completion of the procedure on the permission process.  

The names of the ships of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in the transportation fleet were determined by a survey participated by the people of İzmir.  The name "1881-Atatürk" received the highest vote in the survey participated over 500,000 people.  Received 11 ships so far, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality respectively named these ships as Çakabey, 9 Eylül, 1881 Atatürk, Soma 301, Dario Moreno, Attila İlhan, Foça, Cengiz Kocatoros, Gürsel Aksel, Sait Altınordu and Vahap Özaltay. The next ship will be named "Gezi".

The Metropolitan Municipality named its new ferryboats Hasan Tahsin, Ahmet Piriştina and Kubilay based on the votes of the Izmir people.  

Metin Oktay bearing the nickname "Uncrowned King" started his football career in 1952 with Damlacıkspor, a local İzmir team.  Having played for Yün Mensucat´s youth team between 1953 and1954, he started his professional career after being transferred by İzmirspor before the 1954-1955 season.  During his only season on this club, he experienced İzmir Professional League championship, while being the top scorer.  He stroked a deal with Galatasaray in 1955.  He became the top scorer of the league for three consecutive years.  He continued to be the top scorer in the National League established in 1959, and kept this title in the first three seasons of the league.  He coached various teams after finishing his football career.  On 13 September 1991, he was killed in a car accident at the exit of the Bosphorus Bridge.

The new passenger ships built for İzmir Metropolitan Municipality at Özata Shipyard started a new age in the sea transportation with their comforts, speed and maneuverability.

The carbon composite material used for the ships reduced fuel consumption and lessens the costs of operation, maintenance and repair. Being environmentally-friendly and handicapped-friendly and offering highest levels of passenger stand out as the significant advantages of the new ships.  Thanks to these new, faster ships, the number of daily voyages in the inner gulf has increased to 300 from 200.  Each costing nearly 8 million Euros, the ships can carry 426 passengers.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality´s new ferryboats with a capacity of carrying 450 passengers and 71 vehicles were well received with their technology and comfort. These new ferryboats are suitable for the physically and visually-handicapped people and also have a playground for the children aged 2-5, cages for pets, strollers, and 2 elevators for wheelchairs.
